I’m pretty fucking pissed. So I put a deposit down on that 1997 LS400 last night, only to be told that oops! Someone already had s a deposit on it. They said if it hadn’t sold by 7 today they would give me a call. 7 o’clock rolls by with no call and then I finally call them around 8 and they've already sold it. I got my deposit back ok, but it's just really fucking annoying. I'm going to go for a drive.

Of what ? Also, I got a message to add two quarts of oil today. I added them and the car seems much happier. Have you ever seen this message?

You’re going for two luxury flagships in your garage. Much jealousy.

You got an oil message in your S600? I just check my oil once a day. When it says it’s a half quart low, I add half a quart. It’s coming out of my valve cover gaskets. I’m thinking I might try to change them out myself, and my spark plugs. I just need to find what the cover bolts and the spark plugs need to be torqued too. I’m hoping it will keep the CEL off. It comes on, stays on for about 3 start cycles. Goes off on the fourth start up, but then comes back on within a couple days. It’s got to be the plugs, from what I’ve been told, coilpack failures are far more dramatic...

LS400 is cheaper and has that same fabulous V8. And flies more under the radar.

I haven’t had any real engine troubles. I looked on the forums and it said that it was fairly normal to add oil to the turbo and superchargeded cars. The LS is to replace my aging accord, which is starting to have a pretty big oil problem, along with clinical rust. Didn't you have a misfire problem a few months back ?

It never went away. Either the ethanol fuel is boiling in the rails at the top of the operating temperature range, or nobody ever did the 100k service and who knows how old my spark plugs are. I refuse to believe it’s just the coilpacks. It’s catching hiccups, not continuously misfiring like a coil is bad.

And all the valve cover gaskets go bad. No M275 makes it to 100k on it’s original valve cover gaskets.

What kind of oil do you use? Just curious. I assume Mobil 1 0w40 European Formula, that’s what I use.

Yup. Same here. What do you use for spark plugs

Haven’t bought any yet (brake job on the Jag has had it up on jack stands in the driveway all week) but probably what pelican parts says is the OEM: Bosch NGK IFR6Q-G plugs.

Make sure you get a set of the red silicone spark plug insulators, they’re supposed to be replaced every time the coils come of and crack when they get old altering spark to escape. Be cautious and gentle when removing the coils, too much stress can cause them to fail. Don’t disconnect any hoses, etc. on the cooling systems, they’re a pain to bleed without the octopus. Torque, somewhere between 8 and 20nm? I’ll try to remember to look it up tomorrow. MB plugs list their torque on the box, 23nm IIRC. I personally avoid Bosch plugs whenever possible and prefer to stick with NGK.

Yeah, that's what I'm planning on using when it needs t be done.

Yup. I saw the insulators. And I’ve read on the benz world forums about how careful you have to be when removing the coilpacks (why such an essential part of the engine is so damn fragile...ugh). I’ve read that all that has to be done is unbolting the intercoolers and proping them out of the way, then I can get to the valve covers and the coil packs. I’m hoping it’s not a complicated job, just labor intensive.

Pelican parts is kind of confusing. All the spark plugs are listed as basically the same part but one is listed as being MB part, one as an NGK ($13.50), and one as Bosch ($9.50). But they’re all listed as “Bosch NGK xyz.” But I should get the NGK ones?

Also, I now love my car even more knowing that the tool required to bleed the cooling system is called the octopus.

Don’t worry it’s an easy job. And yeah, just use long screwdrivers or something to prop up the intercoolers.

Definitely NGK. Have you checked FCP or rock auto? One of them might be less confusing.

Affectionately nicknamed :)
